Ten Handy Hints to Happy Hiking
- Wear suitable clothing - ie be prepared for all kinds of weather (cold and
wet, hot and sunny) take waterproofs in Winter and extra layers of warm
clothes, don't forget the sunscreen in Summer.
- Walking boots are usually a must for good grip and to prevent the feet
becoming too tired.
- Keep in step with your leader - the leaders plan the walks carefully
including suitable stops for coffee, lunch, and tea.
- We plan to have a back marker - make sure you know who that is, they could
be useful!
- When road walking listen for cars
- If a vehicle approaches on a single-track road
then we should walk on one
side, following the leader.
- On a road walk on the outside of a bend - you will see what is coming and
they will see you!
- Help each other by looking out - try not to get out of sight of the person
behind you.
- Be aware of others eg the leader or back marker might get lonely.
- Single file - this is necessary beside a road and in a field with crops -
we don't want to leave behind some upset farmers.
